MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation saw a 4.3% increase year-on-year during the first eight months of 2026. The total output reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, compared to 35,935.3 GWh during the same period in 2025. This growth of approximately 1,546.5 GWh was supported by preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information. Several governorates showed positive trends, with August’s production hitting 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July. As a result, national electricity output remained above the levels recorded in 2025.

Muscat experienced the most significant surge in total electricity generation, with a 204.8% rise compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah registered a 44.1% increase, while Al Wusta’s output grew by 8.4%. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.5%, and Dhofar’s output increased by 4.6% over the same timeframe. The regional data illustrated considerable variation in electricity growth, with multiple governorates reporting higher production during this period.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah displayed a different trend, with combined electricity output dropping 16.4% from the same eight-month span of 2025. Musandam’s contribution was 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the previous year. Overall, most regions experienced increases in electricity output, and Oman’s total electricity generation continued to stay above the 2025 levels through August 2026. These figures encompass electricity produced from January through August of this year.
Net electricity production shows an upward trend across Oman
During the same period, net electricity generation also expanded. It increased by 4.6% to reach 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh a year earlier. This measure accounts for purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the growth with a 204.4% rise, followed by Al Dakhiliyah at 44.2%, and Al Wusta and Dhofar with increases of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The total national increase was around 1,592.1 GWh.
Net electricity output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah grew by 5.4%, whereas North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam produced 368.0 GWh, with its annual change rate remaining at 0.0%. Overall, Oman’s net electricity production remained above the levels of 2025, with regional patterns largely mirroring total output movements. Several governorates saw increases in net generation during the first eight months of 2026.
Water output decreases through August 2026
Contrary to electricity trends, Oman’s water production declined over the same eight-month period. Total water output fell by 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from roughly 342.71 million in the previous year. Muscat’s water production decreased by 6.2%, reaching approximately 128.07 million cubic metres, compared to about 136.57 million during the same period in 2025. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease, with output dropping to around 149.90 million cubic metres from roughly 155.19 million cubic metres a year earlier.
Dhofar bucked the national trend, recording an increase in water production. Its output reached about 52.68 million cubic metres, representing a 3.4% rise from approximately 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest data indicates that electricity and water production moved in opposite directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity generation increased at both total and net levels, water production declined overall despite Dhofar’s positive performance. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
