SEOUL / RankWire.AI / – South Korea’s outbound shipments experienced a remarkable increase of 68.7% year-on-year in August, totaling $98.25 billion. This growth was largely driven by persistent global demand for high-performance memory chips and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Official data issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources indicated that imports rose 22.5% to $63.51 billion during the same period, resulting in a monthly trade surplus of $34.75 billion. This strong showing extends the trade growth streak of Asia’s fourth-largest economy for a consecutive 15th month.

The export of semiconductors, which serves as the key contributor to the nation’s trade performance, soared 209% year-on-year to reach an all-time high of $46.65 billion. The expansion in chip shipments was supported by ongoing capital investments among major global technology firms, especially those expanding data center networks and deploying enterprise AI hardware. This marks the third month in a row that semiconductor export volumes have surpassed the $40 billion mark. Additionally, data from the Yonhap News Agency revealed that shipments of computer products increased by 419.5% to $6.24 billion amid rising global NAND memory prices.
Trade Data Confirms $34.75 Billion Monthly Surplus
Energy and chemical sectors also played a significant role in the overall monthly gains. Petroleum product exports jumped 65.3% year-on-year to $6.84 billion, while petrochemical exports grew 12.2% to $3.86 billion. The increase was partly driven by higher global crude oil prices, which supported unit prices across various refined export categories. Meanwhile, automobile exports declined by 29.8%, totaling $3.85 billion. Officials attributed the decrease to temporary seasonal shutdowns, altered summer holiday schedules at major domestic auto plants, and localized labor disputes.
On the geographical front, outbound shipments to key trading partners showed widespread growth. Exports to China jumped 119.3% year-on-year to $24.1 billion, driven by large volumes of memory chips and industrial machinery shipments. Exports to the United States increased 89.3% to $16.5 billion, mainly supported by robust demand for enterprise computing hardware and advanced semiconductors. The trade ministry’s data indicates that Korean exporters experienced growth in seven of the nation’s nine primary regional markets during the August reporting period.
Monthly Records Set for Computer Equipment Shipments
Kim Jung-kwan, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, stated in an official release that exports excluding semiconductors grew by 20%, reflecting a broader recovery across secondary export sectors. Besides core technology components, exports of secondary batteries increased 24% to $600 million, while biohealth product shipments rose 22.3% to a record $1.41 billion, supported by expanded supply contracts across Europe. Korea’s August exports soared by 68.7% to $98.25 billion, as trade officials continue to monitor shifts in foreign trade policies and global supply chain conditions.
The daily average value of exports, adjusted for working days, rose 72.5% year-on-year to $4.47 billion, marking the fourth month in a row that daily exports exceeded $4 billion. Analysts expect this momentum to persist, driven by ongoing global demand for technology hardware as the year approaches its final quarter. Following September data collection, government financial institutions will release finalized quarterly trade balance summaries.
