Egypt Achieves Historic $57.2 Billion in Foreign Reserves

    September 8, 2026

CAIRO, EGYPT / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s net international reserves reached an all-time high of $57.2145 billion at the close of August 2026. The Central Bank of Egypt announced this provisional figure on September 7. Reserves had stood at $56.2939 billion at the end of July. The monthly growth amounted to roughly $920.6 million, or 1.6%. This marks the first time Egypt’s official reserves have surpassed the $57 billion mark.

Egypt foreign reserves rise to record $57.2 billion
Egypt’s foreign reserve stock rose for an eighth straight month in August 2026.

The August figure also continues a consistent upward trend throughout 2026. Egypt began the year with reserves of $52.5938 billion in January. The total increased to $52.7455 billion in February and then to $52.8306 billion in March. April saw a rise to $53.0092 billion, followed by $53.1342 billion in May. By August, reserves had grown approximately $4.62 billion since January and about $5.76 billion from the end of December 2025.

The pace of growth accelerated mid-year. Reserves increased from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June. They then further grew to $56.2939 billion in July before hitting the new record in August. These three monthly increases added over $4 billion to the total reserves. Compared to August 2025, the latest figure is roughly $7.96 billion higher, reflecting an approximate annual growth rate of 16.2%.

    Remittances bolster foreign currency reserves

Remittances from Egyptians abroad also achieved a record high during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. According to the Central Bank of Egypt, these inflows totaled about $47.3 billion, compared to roughly $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year, marking a 29.6% increase. In June alone, remittances reached around $4.2 billion, a 15.6% rise from approximately $3.6 billion in June 2025.

Egypt’s latest balance of payments data covers the first nine months of the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The overall balance recorded a deficit of $1.8 billion from July to March. Meanwhile, the capital and financial account posted net inflows of $9.9 billion, and the current account showed a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures offer the most recent official snapshot of Egypt’s external financial position prior to the August reserve update.

Continued growth in monthly reserves throughout 2026

The series of reserve figures has reached successive record highs this year. Reserves crossed the $55 billion mark in June, then surpassed $56 billion in July. August marked the first month to record over $57 billion. Egypt has now posted three consecutive month-end reserve totals above $55 billion. The August figure is also more than 10% higher than the $51.4516 billion recorded at the end of December 2025.

These latest data position Egypt’s net international reserves at their highest recorded level, maintaining an unbroken upward trend since the start of 2026. Each month from January through August saw the reserves increase compared to the previous month. The August figure remains provisional per the central bank’s reporting standards. Nonetheless, the data clearly indicate a steady rise in Egypt’s reserve stock over the first eight months of the year.
