US Markets Climb as Treasury Yields Drop and Healthcare Stocks Rally

    August 20, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Equity markets in the United States finished higher on Wednesday, buoyed by a notable decline in long-term Treasury yields and a surge in healthcare shares. The S&P 500 increased by 16.22 points, or 0.21%, closing at 7,707.98. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 119.65 points, or 0.22%, ending at 53,463.05. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite rose 41.38 points, or 0.16%, to 26,331.09. These gains marked the end of a three-day losing streak for all three major U.S. indexes.

Wall Street rebounds on lower yields and healthcare surge
U.S. stocks gained as lower long-term Treasury yields eased pressure on major indexes.

Much of the trading session was driven by the bond market following the U.S. Treasury Department‘s announcement of increased liquidity support buybacks for longer-term debt. Starting September 9, the maximum purchase amount will rise from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation, applying to nominal coupon securities with maturities between 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year ranges. The department stated that these larger purchases will continue through November 4 and are in response to high volumes of high-quality offers.

Following the announcement, Treasury yields declined as bond prices increased. The benchmark 10-year yield dropped to around 4.65%, while the 30-year yield decreased to roughly 5.20%. On Tuesday, the 30-year yield reached 5.337%, its highest since 2007. The decline in yields eased some of the pressure that rising borrowing costs had exerted on equities, aiding Wall Street’s recovery from earlier losses during the week.

Healthcare Sector Gains Bolster Market Sentiment

Healthcare stocks saw notable strength, especially after Moderna and Merck announced positive outcomes from late-stage trials involving melanoma treatments. Moderna shares soared 177%, while Merck rose 12.6% in Wednesday’s trading session. The Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial evaluated intismeran autogene combined with Keytruda following surgery for patients with high-risk melanoma. The trial met its primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival and achieved a key secondary endpoint measuring cancer spread prevention.

Following these results, consumer stocks also posted gains, buoyed by several companies releasing quarterly earnings. Estée Lauder’s shares jumped over 16% after its earnings report. Target and Lowe’s also saw increases after presenting their latest financial data. Smaller-cap stocks outperformed their larger counterparts, with the Russell 2000 advancing about 0.5%. These movements contributed to broadening the market’s recovery beyond the healthcare sector. Technology stocks showed mixed results, limiting the overall gains for major indexes.

Major Indices Still Down for the Week

Despite the positive session, the main U.S. stock indexes remained lower for the week through Wednesday’s close. The S&P 500 was approximately 1% below its level from last Friday. The Dow declined about 0.5%, and the Nasdaq had decreased roughly 1.5%. The rebound followed several days during which rising long-term yields put downward pressure on stock valuations, prompting investors to adopt a more cautious stance across key sectors.

As of Wednesday’s close, the major averages remained firmly positive for 2026, with the S&P 500 up approximately 12.6% since the start of the year. The Dow had gained around 11.2%, and the Nasdaq increased roughly 13.3%. Wednesday’s session reflected a modest recovery on Wall Street driven by falling Treasury yields and strong gains in healthcare stocks. The Treasury Department’s buyback program and the positive melanoma trial results stood out as primary market catalysts during the trading day.
