Democratic Republic of the Congo Reports Record Ebola Death Toll of 2,325

    August 17, 2026

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached its most devastating level to date, with 2,325 fatalities recorded. As of Aug. 16, government data indicated 4,945 confirmed cases, with 101 new infections identified in the last 24 hours. This death count surpasses the 2,299 fatalities documented during the Ebola epidemic from 2018 to 2020 in the country.

Since its declaration in May, the outbreak has continued to expand throughout eastern DRC. United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher reported that Ebola was claiming approximately one life every 30 minutes. The case numbers had already exceeded the total from the 2018-2020 outbreak before this latest update. Health officials have identified infections across 54 health zones within six provinces, with Ituri remaining the primary transmission hub, accounting for most confirmed cases.

The current outbreak was officially declared on May 15 after laboratory confirmation of Bundibugyo virus disease. This marks the 17th documented Ebola outbreak in DRC since the virus was first identified in 1976. On May 17, the World Health Organization categorized the situation as a public health emergency of international concern. Currently, no licensed vaccine or specific approved treatment exists for Bundibugyo virus disease. Instead, medical personnel rely on supportive care, isolation, testing, contact tracing, and infection prevention strategies.

Ebola Spreads to Six Provinces in DRC

The outbreak has now affected Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé provinces. Bas-Uélé became the sixth province impacted after authorities confirmed a case in the Buta health zone, where the patient had traveled from Haut-Uélé prior to symptoms appearing. By August 12, health officials reported 965 recoveries nationwide. Response teams are actively monitoring thousands of contacts and working to identify new chains of transmission.

Medical workers face direct exposure risks while treating patients and supporting containment efforts. Confirmed infections among health workers had reached at least 155 by Aug. 9, with 45 of those resulting in deaths. Ongoing insecurity and population displacements have made outbreak management more difficult in several affected regions. Attacks on health facilities have hindered surveillance and treatment activities in parts of eastern DRC. The World Health Organization continues to support testing, infection control, case management, and other response measures alongside local health authorities.

Ebola Crisis Escalates as Death Toll Surpasses Previous Records

In response, health officials have expanded laboratory testing, surveillance, and treatment capacity across affected provinces. Efforts include contact tracing, case management, and conducting safe burials. Community engagement remains a critical aspect of the response in regions with ongoing transmission. Researchers are also investigating experimental vaccines and treatments for Bundibugyo virus disease. A clinical trial started enrolling confirmed patients in Ituri in July, testing potential therapies that have not yet received approval for routine use against the virus.

The outbreak has also led to confirmed cases outside the DRC. Uganda recorded 20 cases and two deaths before discharging its last patient in July. France reported one imported case without documented secondary transmission. Currently, the DRC outbreak ranks second worldwide in Ebola fatalities, following the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which caused 11,310 deaths and 28,616 cases across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, according to outbreak records.

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo began administering Ebola vaccinations in Kisangani on Thursday, launching a targeted campaign in the capital of Tshopo Province to protect frontline responders. The initiative prioritizes healthcare workers, emergency response teams, and individuals with direct contact with confirmed patients as the country confronts its deadliest recorded Ebola outbreak. Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba confirmed that the government deployed an initial supply of the Ervebo vaccine under a compassionate-use framework across impacted eastern provinces to safeguard essential personnel and help disrupt viral transmission chains.
