SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – South Korea recorded a $596.6 million surplus from tourism in June 2026, marking its strongest monthly result since the COVID-19 pandemic. The figure reflects an increase of approximately $1.44 billion compared to June 2025, when the country experienced an $846.8 million deficit. South Korea posts $596.6 million tourism surplus
South Korea’s tourism balance reached $596.6 million in surplus during June 2026.

This June surplus continues South Korea’s streak of four consecutive months with a positive tourism balance. The country had endured 72 straight months of deficits from March 2020 through February 2026, with January 2026 seeing a $1.4034 billion shortfall, followed by February’s $1.0993 billion deficit. The situation reversed in March, when the balance turned positive at $263.8 million, and remained so in April at $159.9 million and in May at $220.5 million.

Tourism receipts for June totaled $2.784 billion, while South Korean travelers’ overseas spending amounted to $2.1874 billion. On average, foreign visitors spent $1,397 per person in June, whereas outbound South Korean travelers spent an average of $1,091. The difference between inbound tourism income and outbound expenditure resulted in the $596.6 million surplus, marking the largest positive monthly balance in over 17 years.

Major Markets Show Growth in International Tourist Arrivals

In June, South Korea welcomed 1,993,128 international visitors, representing a 23.1% increase compared to the same month in 2025. China remained the top source market with 649,582 visitors, experiencing a 36.2% rise year-on-year. Japan followed with 348,216 visitors, up 21.3%, while Taiwan contributed 223,127 arrivals. Visitors from the Americas numbered 219,948, and European travelers reached 119,445 during June.

Between January and June 2026, total international arrivals reached 10,709,919, reflecting a 21% growth over the previous year. Foreign tourist credit card expenditures during this period hit 10.0389 trillion won, a 50.8% increase from the first half of 2025. In June alone, card spending amounted to 2.0544 trillion won, a 66.4% rise compared to the previous year. The Korea Tourism Organization also noted 395,246 international arrivals via regional airports in June, which is a 42.5% increase.

Tourism Revenue Growth Driven by Rising Arrivals

Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reported increases in visitors from multiple long-haul markets during the first half of the year. American arrivals reached 1,077,287, a rise of 12.7% from the same period last year. European visitors increased by 20.2%, totaling 738,943. The United States contributed 811,974 visitors, up 11.1%, while Canada brought in 157,003 arrivals, a 17.1% increase compared to the first half of 2025.

South Korea’s recent monthly surplus follows three years of annual tourism deficits exceeding $10 billion, with deficits of $10.38 billion in 2023 and $10.21 billion in 2024. The shortfall then reached $10.76 billion in 2025. By June 2026, however, the tourism balance had been positive for four straight months. The June receipts surpassed outbound tourism expenses by $596.6 million, making it the largest monthly surplus since the pandemic and the second-highest on record ever.
